Intermediate (3rd - 5th Grade)

Students transition from the Elementary Program to the Intermediate Program in third grade, allowing them to build on the solid phonics based literary foundation they started building in Elementary Program. In the Intermediate Program, the shift of responsibility changes from the hands of parents/guardians and teachers to the students. Teachers help their students become independent by encouraging children to take ownership of their learning. In third grade, students have a homeroom teacher and navigate from class to class meeting with specialty area teachers through the academically departmentalized program. The Intermediate Program, as well as the Middle School Program, works on a rotation schedule. This schedule which, in addition to time devoted to literacy, math, science, social studies every day, also provides time for Spanish, Mandarin, visual arts, dramatic arts, class meetings, music, physical education, technology, STEM, public speaking and debate. Teachers of all disciplines collaborate to implement a cross-curricular academic experience.

Both the Intermediate and Middle School Programs have been designed to allow students the opportunity to be appropriately academically challenged. Placement testing is done prior to the start of the school year, and a schedule is developed for each student.
